    On March 11, 2009 The International Women of Courage Award was created three years ago by then-Secretary Condoleezza Rice. The honorees yesterday included a former child slave Hadizatou Mani of Niger, who was 12 when she was sold into slavery, held her hands together almost limply.

American Corner Brings U.S. to Maradi
On January 7, 2009 Ambassador Bernadette Allen and Public Affairs Officer Stephen Posivak traveled to Maradi to dedicate U.S. Embassy Niamey’s newest American Corner (AC). AC Maradi was created in partnership with the Nigerien Ministry of Culture and municipal authorities, and is housed within Maradi’s Youth Center.

Sixteen Days of activism against Gender-based violence
On December 4, 2008, the Embassy hosted the second event in its series with a presentation by respected Muslim cleric Cheikh Harouna Fodi. Cheik Fodi’s presentation dealt with protection of women and women’s rights within the context of the Islamic faith.
