American Corner Brings U.S. to Maradi

On January 7, 2009 Ambassador Bernadette Allen and Public Affairs Officer Stephen Posivak traveled to Maradi to dedicate U.S. Embassy Niamey’s newest American Corner (AC).  AC Maradi was created in partnership with the Nigerien Ministry of Culture and municipal authorities, and is housed within Maradi’s Youth Center.  It joins the Embassy’s highly popular existing ACs in the cities of Agadez and Zinder.  The ACs provide the population of Niger’s interior with access to books, audio-visual materials, news broadcasts, computers, Internet, and presentations on U.S and other key topics.  Maradi is a particularly important target for Embassy outreach due to its status as the commercial capital of Niger.

Regional and local officials in Maradi arranged a warm welcome for the Embassy delegation at the dedication ceremony, which included presentations of traditional dance and music.  In addition, the Embassy’s American Cultural Center (ACC) sponsored the new Corner’s inaugural conference; a speaker presentation entitled “AGOA: Objectives and Benefits for Niger” by Elhajd Amani Mahamane, Coordinator of the AGOA resource center for Niamey’s Chamber of Commerce.
