U.S.-sponsored media workshop focuses on Press Freedom

On May 2-3, 2008 the U.S. Embassy joined with the Nigerien Association of Editors of Independent Press (ANEPI) in organizing a two-day media workshop to commemorate International Press Freedom Day.  Conference participants included 98 journalists from state-run and private media from throughout the country, who discussed their concerns about press freedom, transparency, and access to information.   In keeping with Nigerien tradition, government officials, international organizations, and NGO representatives were invited for the opening ceremony, where U.S. Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen and Nigerien Minister of Communication Mohamed Ben Omar both addressed the assembly on the importance of these issues in Niger.

The workshop sessions focused on issues of professionalism and ethics in journalism; press freedom; de-penalization efforts aimed at Niger’s criminal libel statutes; and combating corruption and impunity.
