75,000 Arabic books donated to the Minister of National Education
On June 3, 2009, Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen proceeded with the formal donation of 75,000 Arabic books to the Minister of National Education.  The books were purchased through a partial grant of 85,000 USD.  Another partial grant of 16,000 USD was awarded to the NGO ONPCB to carry out the distribution of these books to primary and secondary Franco-Arabic private and public schools throughout the country.
This project was funded by the American Embassy to encourage literacy of Nigeriens students. These Arabic books are also intended to aid teachers of Franco-Arabic schools to better educate, entertain, and motivate their young students.   These books cover a diverse range of subjects such as environment, culture, etc.
In response to Ambassador Allen’s speech, the Minister of National Education expressed his gratitude to the Embassy stating that this donation is an expression of excellent cooperation between the U.S. and Niger.  He added that the books in Arabic will help to reinforce quality of teaching in the Franco-Arabic schools at all levels. Furthermore, these books will help to give girls a chance through promoting the literacy of girls.
