U.S. Embassy uses Sports Diplomacy to reinforce message of Tolerance and Peace

The third edition of U.S. Embassy Niamey’s highly popular  Une Famille, Un Niger (“One Family, One Niger”) basketball caravan took place August 24-September 9, 2007 with games in the cities of Niamey, Diffa, Zinder, Maradi, Tahoua, Konni, Dosso, and Tillabery.  The caravan focuses on promoting inter-racial, inter-ethnic, inter-regional and religious tolerance.   Members of the Nigerien men’s junior national basketball team and a team of women players traveled with the caravan and competed against regional squads in each location.  In addition, popular acting company Troupe Mourna accompanied the caravan and performed opening and half-time skits at each game, which highlighted tolerance themes. The caravan enjoyed record crowds at each location and benefited from the active participation of high-level national, regional, local officials, and religious leaders who echoed the importance of the caravan’s tolerance message.
