English Essay Contest on August 15, 2008

 

The awards ceremony for the First Annual English Essay Contest, a Peace Corps initiative in collaboration with the American Cultural Center (ACC) and the Government of Niger (GON) Ministry of Secondary and Higher Education , was held on August 15, 2008.   Ambassador Allen, Peace Corps Director Mary Abrams, and the GON Minister of Culture Oumarou Hadari participated in the event.   Students nationwide in junior high and high schools were invited to write an essay in English on the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s famous quote: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”  Six prizes were awarded in each of the 8 regions of Niger and 3 nationwide prizes each were awarded at the junior high and high school levels. Ambassador Allen stressed in her remarks the importance of the English language in a world of globalization and the benefits of learning English to young Nigeriens.
