International cooperation brings major donation to Niger

On October 31, 2007, U.S. Ambassador to Niger Bernadette M. Allen, along with representatives of the Government of Niger, Islamic Relief, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the U.S. Defense Attaché, participated in an official ceremony to recognize a recent donation by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also known as the Mormon Church) of 240 tons of supplies with a value of $681,400.  The donation consisted of medical supplies, school materials, personal hygiene kits, cooking oil and ATMIT, a food supplement used to combat malnutrition.

Islamic Relief America organized the receipt and shipment of the donation from the U.S. to Niger with assistance from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), who funded transport costs, and the U.S. Embassy in Niger. After their arrival in-country, the items were turned over to local partners, Islamic Relief Niger and the UNDP, for distribution to needy local communities.
