Security Message for U.S. Citizens – Restricted Movement outside Niamey’s City Limits
January 30, 2013
The U.S. Embassy in Niger informs U.S. citizens of a new practice implemented by the Nigerien government. Beginning on January 30, all Westerners wishing to travel outside the city of Niamey must have a security escort. This policy has been enacted for the safety and security of all Westerners.
If you wish to travel outside the city limits (péage), have your organization communicate with its usual contact at the Gendarmerie to request a security escort, or the Police to request an exception. If you are not affiliated with an organization, contact the U.S. Embassy at (+227) 20-72-26-61. U.S. citizens, attempting to leave the city limits without taking a Nigerien government security escort, or proper authorization, should expect to be stopped by security officials.
There have been no reported problems with air travel (the airport is inside the city limits).
The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens remain vigilant, review their personal security plans, and take appropriate steps to increase their personal security.
