$100,000 USD grant allows for new equipment at the Institute of Journalism in Niger (IFTIC)

On May 29, 2009, Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen proceeded with the formal dedication of equipment provided to IFTIC (the Institute of Journalism in Niger) funded by the Embassy through a grant of 100,000 USD.  The Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication, the Director General of IFTIC among many other high ranking staff attended the ceremony. This is the first substantial donation that IFTIC has received in over 30 years of their operation.

In her remarks, the Ambassador emphasized that the students are the future in journalism and the information system in Niger.  By equipping IFTIC today, Ambassador Allen added, we help them acquire the skills and resources they need to accomplish their key roles—to keep their countrymen informed and to promote democracy.  Through this donation, the United States Government expresses its commitment towards IFTIC to help its students advance themselves and the democratic process in Niger.
Secretary General of the Minister of Communication expressed his gratefulness to the U.S. Embassy for its constant support of the different communication structures. The Secretary General added that this contribution is a testament to the excellent cooperation between our two countries.
This material donation came in time to enable IFTIC to better adapt to their increasing needs, especially in the fields of multimedia.  Director General of IFTIC stated that this contribution will also help IFTIC to advance this upcoming year in the new fields of communication and technology.   These materials include: cameras, computers, recorders, etc.  This contribution has resulted in the modern update of equipment through the replacement of obsolete and insufficient equipment.
