Speaker program addresses rights and responsibilities of Niger's Visually Handicapped.
On January 10, the U.S. Embassy sponsored a presentation on Socio-educative Integration of the Visually Handicapped at the Soli Abourahamane School for the Blind in Niamey with Mr. Soumaila Farka, Head of the Office for the Protection and Promotion of People with Disabilities, at the Nigerien Ministry of Social Affairs. Mr. Farka, who is legally blind, is a well-respected leader in the handicapped community and was recently sponsored by the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section (PAS) to attend an international forum on this topic in Nairobi, Kenya.
His presentation outlined the obstacles faced by Niger’s visually handicapped in being fully incorporated into the educational system and workforce. He emphasized not only the Nigerien government’s responsibility to assist in integrating the physically challenged into general society, but also the handicapped community’s obligation to insist on the right to become productive members of society.
