Presidential Inauguration Generates Record Interest

On January 20, 2009, U.S. Embassy Niamey hosted two official inauguration events to meet the overwhelming demand generated by the Nigerien public to view the installation of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States of America.  Ambassador Bernadette Allen hosted an open house at her residence for Nigerien officials, legislators, local media, members of the diplomatic corps, and members of the American community.  Meanwhile, the Embassy’s Public Affairs Section hosted a free public viewing at the American Cultural Center (ACC).  Both events were extremely well attended with guests uniformly voicing encouragement and optimism toward the new administration.
