Dr. King’s Dream Echoes across Niger

On January 19, 2009, in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, U.S. Embassy Niamey offered a speaker program in Tahoua entitled “Martin Luther King, Jr: from Dream to Reality” with guest presenter Dr. Hamissou Talba of Niamey’s Abdou Moumouni National University.  Ambassador Bernadette Allen gave opening remarks, which reinforced the importance of Dr. King’s contributions to the civil rights movement and the landmark event represented by the election of America’s first African-America president, Barack Obama. Over 400 participants attended the program, including local government officials, religious leaders, faculty and students.   The event provided an excellent venue to channel the enthusiasm and local interest generated by President Obama’s inauguration.
