Celebration of Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, the U.S. Embassy’s American Cultural Center hosted a series of events beginning with a February 7, 2007 presentation entitled Africa in African-American Literature at Niamey’s Lycee d’Excellence. The Lycee d’Excellence is Niger’s premier high school and is attended by the country’s best and brightest. The presenter explored themes of African culture, people and history as they have appeared in the modern writings of African-American authors.

Over two hundred students and teachers attended and gained new insight into how Americans of African descent view their historical, cultural and linguistic ties to the Africa. Ambassador Allen also spoke about her experiences as an African-American in Africa and explained the significance of Black History Month in America.
