U.S. Embassy in Niger Celebrates MLK Birthday 2007

In commemoration of the birthday the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., the U.S. Embassy’s American Cultural Center hosted a showing of the documentary Martin Luther King, Jr: Legacy of a Dream on January 26, 2007 at Niamey’s Djado Sekou Cultural Center. The film was followed by a concert by Etran Finatawa, a local performing group which fuses musical styles of two of Niger’s main ethnic groups. The event also featured opening remarks on the life and significance of MLK by Ambassador Allen, and a dramatic interpretation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech by two members of the ACC’s English Language Club.

The attendees left with an enhanced understanding of the achievements and teachings of Dr. King and an appreciation for the power of popular movements to affect societal change. The musical performance by a multi-ethnic Nigerien group reinforced Dr. King’s message of tolerance and equality.
