U.S Embassy Sponsors Training for Nigerien Journalists
In collaboration with the Nigerien Private Journalists Union (UJPN), the U.S. Embassy’s American Cultural Center sponsored a three-day media conference on professionalism and ethics in journalism, from November 16-18, 2006. The conference educated participants on the ethical practice of investigative journalism, protection of sources, and access to public information. The presentations deepened their understanding of what press freedom means in practice. Participants left with a clearer understanding of the role of the media in society and the belief that the responsible and ethical practice of journalism is a key component in a successful, democratic society. The participants enjoyed a frank and open exchange with the panelists on a variety of topics within the main theme.
The conference included journalists from both private and government media outlets and drew participants from throughout the country. Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen and Ms. Mariama Keita, the president of Niger’s High Council of Communication (CSC), were the featured speakers with Ms. Keita also leading one of the presentation sessions.
