Rosa Parks cup 2007
The U.S. Embassy in Niger held its second annual Rosa Parks Cup girl’s basketball tournament in the city of Dosso, as part of a two-day sports diplomacy program in partnership with the Nigerien National Basketball Federation. The program consisted of basketball clinics for boys and girls from the regions of Dosso, Tillaberi, and Niamey. The Rosa Parks Cup game was held at the conclusion of the first day and pitted the local team from Dosso against the girls’ squad from Tillaberi in western Niger. Over three hundred children participated in the two-day program.
Prior to the game, both Ambassador Allen and the governor of Dosso addressed the participants on the importance of the U.S. civil rights movement and the contributions of the figures who were engaged in that struggle. The participants also learned important lessons about competition, teamwork and fairness in addition to honing their basketball skills.
