Commemoration of the Nigerienne Women’s Day
(14 May, 2009)

On May 14, 2009, in Commemoration of the Nigerienne Women’s Day, Embassy Niamey sponsored a speaker presentation at the American Cultural Center with guest speaker Mrs. Maiga Zeinabou Labo, Jurist, and member of the Nigerien Association of Female Jurists (AFJN) on Women and the judiciary system.

In his opening remarks, the PAO, Stephen Posivak stated that equal access to Justice for all citizens is of utmost importance.  He also reaffirmed the U.S. Embassy joining the efforts of the Government of Niger to promote the rights of every citizen.

As for Mrs. Maiga’, she gave an overall view  of justice  works in Niger, the statics of women in the justice field  is very low compared to men ;  she argues that there’s  no reason why women can’t have equal access to justice, but unfortunately that’s not the case.  Women encounter many obstacles during repudiation or divorce especially when couples have children. The right to land left behind t their fathers and spouses.   She concluded that low representation of women in the justice system combined with, less involvement of women in decision making instances limit women access to justice.
