Niger Women’s Day Celebration (12 & 14 May 2008)

On May 12 the Public Diplomacy section kicked off Embassy Niamey’s celebration of Niger Women’s Day by sponsoring a Hip-Hop concert featuring one of Niger’s leading Hip-Hop artists, Princess Tifa. About 70 people, most of them young, attended the event.

In further recognition of this important day, on May 14 the Public Diplomacy section held a conference on the theme “Stakes and Perspectives of Professional and Technical Teaching for Women.”  Mrs. Hassane Amina Wangari, Director of Complexe Wangari, of Niamey spoke at the conference.  About 150 people attended the event, including government officials, representatives from local and international nongovernmental organizations, the media, and civil society, students, educational leaders, and human rights representatives.

Ambassador Bernadette M. Allen addressed the audience prior to the speaker’s presentation. In her speech, Ambassador encouraged efforts on behalf of girls’ education and urged women to fight for their rights.
