Nigeriens celebrate U.S Democratic Process

In response to unprecedented interest generated by the 2008 U.S. presidential elections, U.S. Embassy Niamey hosted two Election Day events geared toward educating key Nigerien contacts in government, media, civil society, academia, international organizations and religious associations, about the U.S. democratic process.  The first took place on November 4 at the American Cultural Center and included an address by Ambassador Bernadette Allen, who reminded the audience of the necessity of voter participation in a democratic society.   Participants were also treated to a presentation on the U.S. electoral process by the Embassy’s Information Resource Center, and participated in a mock election administered by a volunteer committee of Nigerien attendees. On November 5, Ambassador Allen hosted a breakfast Open House event at her residence for American citizens, high-level Nigerien contacts, and the media.  Guests were invited to watch live broadcasts of election returns and results.    These events garnered significant interest from media and civil society groups as Niger begins to prepare for its own presidential and legislative elections in 2009.
