U.S Embassy celebrates National Women’s History Month

In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 08) the Embassy held its inaugural National Women’s History Month event entitled Women and Entrepreneurship in Niger: Stakes, Challenges, and Perspectives. The lecturer was Mrs. Maidah Zeinabou, founding director of Niger Lait, a major Nigerien dairy corporation. Mrs. Zeinabou attended a State Department-sponsored program in the U.S. on Women and Entrepreneurship in October-November 2006 and began her presentation by recounting her experiences in America. She went on to focus on women’s economic issues in Niger and the difficulties Nigerien women confront when trying to set up a business enterprise.

On March 20, the ACC organized a conference on the theme Women and Journalism. The lecturer was Ms. Mariama Keita, a renowned local journalist and former president of the High Council on Communication (CSC), which regulates private media in Niger.

On March 30-31, the ACC partnered with the Center for Music Promotion and Training (CFPM), Niger’s premier music training institute, on our closing event-- the WAKE inter-scholastic talent competition. This contest included twelve girls from five local secondary schools, who competed by singing modern and traditional songs related to women’s rights and women’s issues.
