ELP Scholarship Students Practice Skills Outside the Classroom

On April 8, fifty Access Microscholarship students from the U.S. Embassy’s English Language Program (ELP) went on a one-day enrichment study trip to Tabernassa, Balayara about 60 miles outside of Niamey, Niger’s capital. The Access Microscholarship program is a State Department funded initiative which provides tuition, transportation funds and supplies for underprivileged students from the environs of Niamey.

The excursion was co-sponsored by the Embassy’s American Cultural Center (ACC) and ANED, the local NGO which administers the Access program on behalf of the Embassy. Participants were required to speak “English only” for the duration of the trip, which provided them with an experiential learning opportunity as a practical exercise to improve their English language skills outside the classroom environment.
