U.S Expert Explains Role of the Media in a Democratic Society

Mr. Eduardo Cue, journalist and noted media expert, traveled to Niger in July for a series of U.S. Embassy-sponsored activities designed to raise awareness among Nigerien journalists, media executives and government officials on the roles and responsibilities of the media in a democracy.

As part of his five-day visit, Mr. Cue toured the facilities of multiple state-run and private media outlets in Niamey and Tillaberi, and was the featured presenter at a two-day media training conference which included journalists from throughout the country. Cue also gave a presentation on the media’s responsibility to the public geared toward social activist groups and NGO leaders in Niamey.

According to Cue, freedom of the press and responsible journalism are essential components of a democracy, since the public’s right to information is the cornerstone of a free society.
