U.S. Embassy Niamey Sponsors Conference Series at Islamic University

On October 28, 2008 U.S. Embassy Niamey and Niger’s Islamic University at Say launched a new partnership with the first of a series of six conferences on Islam.  The inaugural presentation entitled “Islam: Between Divine Inspiration and Humane Reflexion” was given by Dr. Boukary Kindo, a repected Islamic scholar and lecturer at the University.   Kindo noted that Islam is a religion of balance, and that revelation and reasoning must be viewed as complementary concepts.  Religious revelation provides the general guidelines for living; however reason must be used in everyday life to comprehend and address the challenges of the world and the environment, and to adapt to them, as necessary.  He argued that extremism in the name of Islam is not a valid course of action according to this tenet of the religion. More than 200 invitees attended the conference, including Minister of Religious Affairs Issaka Labo, diplomats from various Muslim countries, Say’s regional traditional chief, national legislators, local authorities, University faculty and administrators, students, and local residents. In a media interview following the event, the University’s newly-installed Rector Sekkat Abdel Jaouad explained the program’s goal to stimulate intellectual discourse and debate on similar Islamic-themed topics. The conference series is being funded through a $125,000 grant provided to the University by the Embassy through its American Cultural Center.  The grant will also fund the expansion and modernization of the University’s library, revision of its English language teaching program, and will furnish equipment and training to improve its extracurricular sports programming.
