Demonstration in Niamey Planned for Thursday July 10, 2008

 

This warden message is being issued to alert all American citizens living in Niger that a demonstration is expected to occur in Niamey at the National Assembly (Place de Concertation) and move through downtown to the offices of the Prime Minister between 8 am and 12 noon on Thursday July 10, 2008.  Approximately 5,000 to 6,000 people are expected to participate in the demonstration.The U.S. Embassy strongly urges all American citizens to avoid all of downtown Niamey on Thursday morning. If you happen to live within this area, the US Embassy urges you to stay inside your home on Thursday morning.As a general rule, Americans are urged to avoid all large public gatherings and street demonstrations. We wish to remind you that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can at times turn confrontational without advanced warning.American citizens may contact the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Niamey for more information. The Consular Section, located on the Rue des Ambassades in Niamey, is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 1pm.
