ELP Teacher Training sessions enchange local English teaching skills

On January 5, the U.S. Embassy’s English Language Program (ELP) launched its 2008 Teacher Training Workshop series at the American Cultural Center. This year’s program began with a session on professional development presented by Mr. Ganda Nabi Mahamadou, a Nigerien alumnus of the Fulbright Fellowship Program and a PhD student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Ganda stressed the importance of constant personal and professional development during a teaching career, in order to keep current with new developments in the field.   On January 19, Ms. Doulla Safiatou of Niger’s National Curriculum Development and Teacher Training Office followed-up with a presentation on syllabus creation and contextual lesson planning.

These biweekly sessions, offered in collaboration with Niger’s Ministry of Higher Education, provide much-needed training to Nigerien English teachers.  Attendance at each session averages between 60-70 teachers.   In addition to the practical training, the sessions also provide a forum for networking and professional exchange for Nigerien teachers with their colleagues from through the country.
