Cultural Exchange Participants Share Impressions of U.S. Elections

On October 23, 2008 U.S. Embassy Niamey’ s American Cultural Center hosted a panel discussion on “Civil Society and Media Involvement in the U.S. Election Process” with three recently-returned U.S. sponsored  exchange program participants.  The panel included International Visitor Leadership Program attendees Oumarou Hadiza Djido and Amadou Saibou Adamou, who recently returned from their program “Civil Society and Good Governance,” and Nigerien journalist and BBC correspondent Idi Baraou, who participated in a Foreign Press Center-sponsored program on U.S. election coverage.  Panel members shared their experiences and first-hand observations on the vibrant role which grassroots organizations, NGOs, media, and citizen volunteers play in the U.S. election process.  Their presentations and the animated discussion which followed were particularly relevant as Niger prepares for its own presidential and legislative elections in 2009.
