warden messages

Demonstartion Planned for Saturday September 08, 2007

This warden message is being issued to alert all American citizens living in Niger that a demonstration is expected to occur in Niamey between the Place Toumo and the Place de Concertation (the National Assembly) on the morning of Saturday, September 8, 2007.  In addition, demonstrations may also occur in front of the Libyan Embassy, which is located on Rue des Ambassades between downtown Niamey and the French and U.S. embassies.

The U.S. Embassy strongly urges all American citizens to avoid all of downtown Niamey and the area around the French, U.S. and Libyan embassies on Saturday morning.  If you happen to live within this area, the US Embassy urges you to stay inside your home on Saturday morning.

As a general rule, Americans are urged to avoid all large public gatherings and street demonstrations.  We wish to remind folks that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can at times turn confrontational without much advanced warning.

American citizens may contact the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Niamey for more information.  The Consular Section, located on the Rue des Ambassades in Niamey, is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 1pm. Telephone: 20-72-26-61/62/63/64; e-mail: ConsulateNiamey@state.gov.  For after-hours emergencies, please dial 20-72-31-41.
