Escalation of Violence in Northern Niger

Over the last several months there has been an escalation of violence in northern Niger.  Yesterday the President of Niger declared a State of Alert for the region of Agadez, to include the cities of Agadez, Arlit, and Iferouane.  This State of Alert means that all travelers in areas outside of these cities are liable to be stopped and held for questioning.  Moreover, the Nigerien military now has the authority to hold individuals for questioning, without cause, for more than the standard 48-hours.

On May 17, the US Embassy in Niamey prohibited U.S. Embassy personnel from traveling north of the city of Abalack. We continue to strongly urge American citizens to refrain from all travel to this region. American citizens may contact the Consular Section of the US Embassy in Niamey for more information. The Consular Section, located on the Rue des Ambassades in Niamey, is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 1pm. Telephone: 20-72-26-61/62/63/64; e-mail: ConsulateNiamey@state.gov. For after-hours emergencies, please dial 20-72-31-41.
