Temporary Embassy Travel Restrictions

May 17, 2007

Dear Fellow Americans:

Over the last several months, there has been an escalation in violence in northern Niger, particularly in and around the cities of Iferouane, Arlit, and Agadez. In recent incidents, vehicles have struck landmines, killing and injuring persons. In addition, there have been confirmed reports of vehicle thefts and car jackings in the city of Agadez and the surrounding area. Several international organizations, including private and nongovernmental groups, have temporarily relocated some personnel from these areas. Furthermore, the Governor of Agadez has ordered that all Government official 4x4 vehicles be parked in Government compounds after 6 pm and has instructed security forces to seize any 4x4 vehicle in circulation after 6 pm.

On April 23, the US Embassy in Niamey temporarily prohibited U.S. Embassy personnel from traveling north of the city of Agadez. In light of current incidents, this prohibition has been extended to include the city of Agadez. We strongly urge American citizens to refrain from all travel to these areas. American citizens may contact the Consular Section of the US Embassy in Niamey for more information. The Consular Section, located on the Rue des Ambassades in Niamey, is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 1pm. Telephone: 20-72-26-61/62/63/64; e-mail: ConsulateNiamey@state.gov. For after-hours emergencies, please dial 20-72-31-41.

Cordially,

Richard Roberts
Consular Officer
Embassy, Niamey
