Embassy Travel Restrictions

July 21, 2007

This warden message is to inform all Americans living in Niger that large-scale demonstrations are expected to occur in Niamey in the vicinity of the Place de la Bienvenue, the Grande Marche, and the Place de Concertation between 7 am and 12 noon Saturday July 21, 2007. The possible demonstration route is shown in blue on the attached map.

All official Americans in Niger have been prohibited from traveling into downtown Niamey on Saturday morning. The US Embassy strongly urges all Americans to refrain from all travel to the area inside the black circle on the attached map Saturday morning. If you happen to live within this circle, the US Embassy urges you to stay inside between 7 am and 12 noon.
Demonstrations have also been predicted for other Nigerien cities - particularly Agadez. All Americans in Niger, therefore, are urged to be especially vigilant and to avoid large public gatherings and street demonstrations. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational without much advanced warning

American citizens may contact the Consular Section of the US Embassy in Niamey for more information. The Consular Section, located on the Rue des Ambassades in Niamey, is open Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5:30pm, and on Fridays from 8am to 1pm. Telephone: 20-72-26-61/62/63/64; e-mail: ConsulateNiamey@state.gov. For after-hours emergencies, please dial 20-72-31-41.

Cordially,
